Benefits of Becoming a Childminder?
What is a Childminder Agency?
A childminder agency is an organisation registered with Ofsted that has devolved powers to monitor the standard of care provided by childminders registered with them. They are inspected regularly by Ofsted ensuring they maintain good quality services. An agency is required to publish details about that monitored quality ensuring parents can make informed choices.
How Do I Become a Childminder?
Childminding is a rewarding career, but it is not as simple as spreading the word and waiting, careful consideration and preparation are required before you start your accreditation process. The childcare sector is highly regulated with stringent checks and procedures in place to protect children.
There are certain conditions of caring for children that mean Ofsted registration is not required. Read the Ofsted factsheet Early Years and Childcare Registration Handbook. However, if any of the following applies to you, then read on.
To Become a Childminder You Must
- Be at least 18 years old
- Register either with Ofsted or a Childminder Agency
- Have a paediatric first aid certificate
- Have suitable premises
- You must have the right to work in the UK and will need to have good enough English to ensure children’s welfare and safety
- Provide details of a minimum of 2 referees
- You will require a Disclosure and Barring Service check (DBS) beforehand, along with everyone else you live with over 16 and sign up to the update service
You will need to be physically and mentally capable of caring for children
You will require a doctor to complete and sign a health declaration booklet for you to confirm this
Registering with Suttonchase rather than Ofsted
Childminders Can Only Register With One Agency So Why Choose Us?
Our mission is to ensure the childminding services offered under our name are of the highest quality. The first few years of a child’s life are the most important in terms of development; whether this is physically, emotionally, socially or intellectually. This period is the earliest opportunity to get it right. Children develop at a fast pace, and the opportunities offered impact on this development. EPPE research found children benefit significantly from high-quality learning experiences.
At Suttonchase, we will follow the same guidance relating to Ofsted’s regulation and inspection of childminder’s, using the same framework when assessing, registering and regulating EYFS. We will make sure all requirements, policies and procedures, risk assessments, safeguarding, welfare etc. are met per Ofsted rules and regulations.
We are passionate about parents being their child’s first educator but acknowledge that childcare is essential in today’s modern world. To balance home learning and quality early education experiences, we aim to deliver training that underpins parental engagement and support for home learning. In addition to our drive to empower parents, we have a strong emphasis on social mobility and unlocking a child’s potential.
